Almost suspended between sea and sky, Hotel Belmond Caruso is located in a former medieval palace. Situated on the highest and quietest point in Ravello, the luxury hotel overlooks the rocks and cliffs of Italy’s Amalfi Coast and the Mediterranean (or more accurately Tyrrhenian) Sea. With frescoed lounges, vaulted stone vaults and just 50 highly individual rooms and suites that take in every shape and angle of the ancient palace’s architecture, this is an intimate retreat with an intriguing sense of history. But above all, with its rose cave leading to one of the world’s most spectacular infinity pools, with sunlit or candlelit Belvedere restaurant, and with a rich sense of its past as a retreat for presidents, writers and movie stars, the hotel is almost impossibly romantic.
Six Senses Zighy Bay is an ultra-luxurious “hidden gem” located on Oman’s northern Musandam Peninsula, just a scenic two-hour drive from Dubai. The setting of this beautiful local country-style resort with its private marina is spectacular, with dramatic mountains on one side and a 1.6 km (1 mile) stretch of sandy beach on the other. The resort creates a sense of exotic remoteness, yet offers every convenience, easy accessibility and luxury beyond imagination. Inspired by traditional Omani houses, the units feature high ceilings in an authentic style, a colorfully upholstered seating area and cloud-like beds. All villas have a private pool where guests can cool off under high cobblestone walls. The property also has a fantastic spa and several first class restaurants.
Royal Malewane is a luxury safari lodge with several one to six bedroom cabins located in the Thornybush Private Game Reserve on the western border of the Kruger National Park. Perhaps the most iconic image associated with Montenegro, the fortified island of Sveti Stefan dates back to the 15th century, when Adriatic pirates ruled this crystal clear coastline. Linked to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, the restored village is across the bay from Villa Miločer, a former royal retreat, and offers unparalleled access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Bay of Kotor. Together with 80 acres of land, two kilometers (1.3 miles) of beaches and an independent Amman Spa, these two historic sites make up Amman Sveti Stefan. While the island’s historic exterior remains largely unchanged, the resort’s interior has been restored and updated to meet modern expectations. Expect to find 58 unique luxury accommodations, all with luxurious bathrooms and endless views, from the ocean and rooftops to ancient courtyards and squares.

Soneva Fushi, the Maldives’ first Robinson Crusoe hideout, is located on the private tropical island of Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The island, which is 1,400 m (4,600 ft) long and 400 m (1,300 ft) wide, is among the largest islands in the Maldives. In addition to the crystal clear water, white beaches and tropical climate, the island’s unusually rich vegetation offers a unique nature experience. Massive luxury villas and private residences with many bedrooms like from a fairy tale are hidden among dense tropical greenery. In keeping with the shipwreck theme, many are built to look like wooden houses. All open onto their own private stretch of sugar-white sand, and most have their own private seawater pools. Intuitive service is provided by Mr/Ms Friday butlers who know what you want before you ask for it.
Miavana is an incredibly luxurious resort located on the remote island of Nosy Ankao, which is part of an archipelago of five islands off the northeast of Madagascar. Surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and the spectacular marine wonders of the Indian Ocean, Myawana comprises just 14 one, two and three bedroom villas along the island’s pristine white western beaches. Miavana’s palatial villas have been perfectly designed by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, the star architects who also designed the North Seychelles (see below), and allow guests to step directly onto the powdery sand from their private decks to enjoy a spectacular panorama of sunsets in the Indian Ocean stretching to the distant contours of mainland Madagascar. Boat and helicopter transfers to the mainland are available, where resort guides can take you to a world of lemurs and chameleons and a mosaic of unexplored bays.
Remote but accessible by a one-hour flight from Bangkok on the resort’s private jet, Soneva Kiri is located on Thailand’s 4th largest but least populated island, Koh Kood. The resort’s 36 villas (including 11 private residences) are among the largest in the world. Set on the idyllic beach or sun-drenched rainforest slopes, all feature stunning infinity pools, incredibly chic furnishings, personal electric buggies and impeccable service provided by private butlers. Highlights include the Paradiso Open Air Cinema, Benz’s Mangrove Restaurant, Chocolate and Ice Cream Bar, Children’s Cave and the spectacular Treetop Dining Room.
The North Island has a reputation as the world’s most exclusive hideaway. The insanely beautiful island has just 11 beautiful hand-crafted villas overlooking the pristine white sands and turquoise waters of the Ile Du Nord Eco-Reserve. Raised from the ground to catch the cooling breezes of the Indian Ocean, all villas open onto private gardens and the beach. Plunge pools and outdoor showers add the finishing touch to your private retreat. The island lounge and dining area, the scenic spa and fitness center, the library and diving center and swimming pool are embedded in a granite plinth. Keep an eye out for Brutus, the island’s 160-year-old tortoise. The resort was the setting for the honeymoon of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, in 2011.

In Sanskrit, Soneva Jani is located on Medhufaru Island, which is part of an uninhabited cluster of five islands in Nunu Atoll. The most exclusive hotel in the Maldives and my absolute favorite hotel in the world is fringed by pristine beaches covered in lush tropical greenery and surrounded by a 5.6 km (3.4 mi) lagoon of crystal clear water with uninterrupted 360° views of the Indian Ocean . Soneva Jani currently has 24 water villas and one beach villa, although additional beach villas are planned at a later date. Each of the 24 water villas is superbly designed and has a private pool and opens onto its own part of the lagoon, with some villas featuring slides that go directly from the top deck into the lagoon below. The highlight of the villas is the retractable roof in the bedroom, which slides back at the touch of a button so guests can lie in bed and gaze at the stars.
