Located in Gunung Rapat, about five kilometers south of Ipoh, Sam Poh Tong is considered the largest cave temple in Malaysia. Local legends say that a Chinese monk traveling through Ipoh in 1890 found the cave and decided to stop and meditate there. According to legend, he stayed in the cave for 20 years until he died.
The temple structure in its current form dates back to the 1950s and is still a place where Buddhist monks and nuns come to meditate. A flight of 246 steps leads you to the mouth of the open cave with a small reclining Buddha statue. Outside the temple you’ll find a Japanese koi pond, where local Buddhist followers come to release the turtles, which are considered a long-standing symbol.
