Thanks to a series of new fitness programs planned, Escondido residents will soon have several new options for getting in shape.
On Nov. 18, the city announced the first of five planned “fitness initiatives,” described as free outdoor gyms in public spaces. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on the original playground in Mountain View Park.

The city plans to build two more gyms in the spring at Kit Karson Park and near the city’s main library on South Kalmia Street. City officials said the final two courts will be built in the near future.
Another outdoor recreation project is planned for Jesmond Dene Park, where a bike park will be built and named after councilor John Masson, who died in March. According to city staff reports, Masson was a strong advocate of youth recreation and enjoyed activities such as skateboarding, motorcycling and mountain biking.
The Escondido City Council gave the project the green light at its Nov. 18 meeting, authorizing the city to accept a $271,000 grant for the new bike park.
At the Nov. 18 meeting, the council also received an update on plans to build an ice rink in Washington Park. The city has invested in the design and construction of a new facility for skateboarding. The staff report estimated the design cost of the rink and adjacent parking lot at $143,574 and construction of the rink at $382,000.

At the same time, the city is pushing ahead with additional parks, and is sending letters to the state to provide a planned bike park at Jesmond Dene Park. Axelrod said the work will include amending the park plan.
“We want the project to move forward quickly,” he said. Axelrod said Jesmond Den Park is in Masson’s area. “It’s a way to honor him and what he gave to the community.”
The project is sponsored by the San Diego Mountain Bike Association, which may help with the project’s design costs, said Ben Stone, the association’s trail coordinator.
