Western North Carolina – and Asheville in general – is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, kayaking, white water rafting, tubing, rock climbing and listing. There are many good companies here that offer the best experiences in these areas or you can search the country, but here are some ideas if you want to try other activities and can’t find them and work elsewhere.

I’ve done a lot of ziplining through the trees, but ziplining between the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains is one of my most memorable experiences to date. Navitat Canopy Adventures is located in Barnardsville, less than 30 minutes’ drive from downtown Asheville.

Western North Carolina is known for being one of the few places in the world where you can see both blue ghost fireflies and synchronous fireflies. The only time they can be seen is from mid-May to mid-June, during the breeding season. Asheville Hiking Tours will pick you up in downtown Asheville and take you to a hidden spot to see these bioluminescent beauties. They also offer some great waterfalls, hikes, and overnight camps!

If you like kayaking, you might want to try belly diving. It’s a kayak that you lay down and paddle like a surfboard. They were invented by Adam Masters here in western North Carolina. Take an introductory Whitewater Belyak course at Tuckasegee Gorge in Dillsboro NC (about an hour drive from Asheville) on select Saturdays or look for them at local festivals and events!

If you’re new to the outdoors and just don’t want to do all the activities, check out NCline Adventures. Greg creates custom trips for you and your family/friends, including epic hikes, camping, wedding getaways and more! It has a sprinter van equipped if you want to experience #vanlife, where you can sleep comfortably under the stars and wake up to the sunrise on the mountain. Taste Like Home has owned the world’s #1 food tour based in Asheville for 25 years. With more than 300 species of wild foods, the Asheville region is the second richest ecosystem on Earth. They offer forage-to-table tours within 15 to 45 minutes of downtown Asheville and the Wild Food Stroll at the Omni Grove Park Inn.

There is no shortage of hotels, AirBNBs and campgrounds where you can spend the night, but I’ve never seen anything quite like Asheville Glamping. And if this is the first time you’ve heard the word, glamping = glamorous camping. Spend at least two nights in a yurt, steeple, tipi, vintage cinema, log cabin or dome perfect for stargazing. The longer you can pre-write the better!

You may want to explore other world-related skills such as cooking, pottery, leather bookkeeping, box-making, secretarial work, and other ancient, ancestral, or ancestral skills. Check out the Holistic Survival School (HoSS) founded by Luke McLaughlin located on 45 acres in Weaverville, NC, about 20 minutes north of Asheville. Check their calendar for all types of private tuition, junior tuition, careers and business opportunities.

After driving up the east coast of California in an RV to see our significant others during the pandemic, we look forward to spending more time with family. My sister and her family were together with my parents, so we knew it was safe to spend time with them. We think it’s a perfect opportunity for a small family trip to Asheville with kids.

We knew we wanted to fly to some part of the National Forest, but we wanted to go into town for some good food. So we decided to rent an Airbnb with strict cleaning protocols to find some work outside.

Our trip to Asheville is relaxing, fun and perfect for spending lots of time outdoors with the kids – and a puppy! My sister-in-law found so many wonderful options through her research that are kid- and dog-friendly (although they brought their beautiful husky with them). We loved our time there and hope this information is helpful for you!

We stayed in a beautiful Airbnb outside of town in Mars Hill. We really liked the house we stayed in – it was beautiful, there was nothing else around and the views were even better. However, it’s not the easiest thing to do in Asheville with kids. If you are looking for a child and pet friendly rental,

Otherwise, other good options are the SpringHill Suites, the Hampton Inn, the Fairfield Inn, the Homewood Suites, or the Best Western. Here are some other great options!

Asheville looks different every season. For a summer visit full of water sports and hiking, here are some things you’ll need:

Asheville has great food! We haven’t scratched the surface of the places on our list yet, but we hope you can enjoy some of them too!

These Asheville waterfall hikes were the highlight of our visit. We love them all and would love to explore the Asheville Pools if you visit during the warmer months! Unfortunately, none of these hikes we encountered were wheelchair accessible. If you find any good ones, please let me know!

Day Trips Near Asheville, N.c., In The Blue Ridge Mountains

This is a beautiful, short hike to a truly beautiful waterfall. It has a low yield but can be made for young children. Climbing the waterfall is fun, but be careful as it can be slippery. There’s also a nice little pool to hang out under the waterfall! It’s about a half hour drive east of downtown Asheville and has great parking.

Note: The linked site says it’s 2.7 miles RT, while AllTrails says it’s 2.1 miles. Our mileage showed to be in line with the rear.

A very short hike with little elevation gain will reward you with fun water sports. There are several pools, including a small pool for small children to play in. There is a bridge that crosses the river (safe for young children as there is only one path on the other side!) that takes you into deeper water.

On the other hand, we love jumping off the rock into the pool (about 7-8 feet high) even if the water is ice cold! Our 9 and 7 year olds are strong swimmers in their own dives. Our 5 year old son is a good swimmer and jumps on good trampolines. But it was tall and different so it was more comfortable for my husband to jump in the water, it worked well. Our 2 year old jumped from a small rock to his dad in the water!

What Are The Best Outdoor Activities In Asheville?

It was raining when we went so there weren’t many other people around. This one is very popular, however it is full on hot sunny days (the car park was full when we saw it the next day). About 45 minutes southwest of Asheville.

This is probably our third favorite trip we’ve ever taken. Although the lower waterfall was full,
