A Whole New World For Halo 5: Guardians Begins Now
Knowledge of the game and the history of the participants. As someone without this knowledge, I was hoping that developer 343 Industries managed to make the latest entry welcome to newbies and veterans alike.
Unfortunately, the verdict is still out at this point. Last week at a media-only event in San Francisco, I played two single player missions.
, but they weren’t consistent, and neither were the early missions of the game. I jumped right in with Master Chief and Blue Team in the second mission and then followed up with my first look at Jameson Locke and his team in the tenth mission of the game.
The Master Chief’s mission takes place in the depths of a cold, dark, and generally hostile space station, complete with forced (but beautiful) views from voids and empty windows. Your mission is to try to take over the station, but things go wrong and instead you are forced to turn on a nuclear reactor and blow up the place. Locke’s mission takes place in a completely different setting; The objective is to eliminate a giant spaceship called the Kraken, which is laying siege to the rocky canyons and mountains of the planet you have landed on. But aside from the immediate objectives of each mission, I had no idea how these events mattered in the overall story. The Halo universe is complex, almost Byzantine, and I had no real idea what each character’s motivation was other than “dying”.

However, it doesn’t seem fair to judge the story elements of a game when you haven’t played it from the beginning. Thankfully, the mixed story didn’t escape him.

It’s still the greatest first-person shooter experience possible. It’s a very polished affair with easy to understand controls. If you’ve played any console-based FPS before, you’ll feel right at home here. The game runs smoothly at 60fps and exudes a high level of polish that makes you feel confident in what you’re getting. This is the definition of the “AAA” title. In general, the missions weren’t exactly memorable, even a day later I had a hard time remembering what I was trying to accomplish.
The gameplay, however, was refreshingly varied: both episodes featured plenty of first-person shooters, but also some fun (and challenging) vehicle-based units that did a great job of destroying wave after wave of enemies. There was a particularly exciting part in Locke’s mission where he had to fly into the heart of the Kraken, land on the ship after sending out a series of turrets, and fight his way down into the depths to detonate the core. It’s a well-executed action piece that can set the game apart from many other games like it.

Due to the ever-changing environments, even killing aliens didn’t get tiring. In particular, each mission had a lot of depth. There’s a lot of action above and below you, making it hard to focus on where you’re going when you’re clearing a section of the map. But while most of the missions involved taking down hordes of Covenant Grunts, Elites, Jackals, and Hunters, they felt significantly less repetitive than Destiny’s, which is perhaps the most obvious point of comparison.
Still, I wouldn’t characterize the single player experience as unexpected, nor was it particularly interesting or particularly challenging. But that all changed when I started testing cooperative missions with three human players. when you play alone

In a cooperative it is completely different. The game increases the difficulty to account for your human controlled companions. Fortunately, it made the whole experience more fun. There were at least two sections where our team fought multiple massive Hunters, as well as more standard enemy troops, and we had to be more cautious and deliberate than in the single player campaign. Case in point: If more than two of your teammates are down and waiting for help, you’ll likely have to start over. There was a sense of relief and accomplishment after getting through those difficult parts, something that is rare when playing solo.

Is it enough to make me buy an Xbox One? From what I’ve seen of the single-player preview, probably not – this title will probably appeal to the (huge) die-hard fan group and probably sell a lot of Xbox Ones to get on board yet. As a newbie like myself, I found that playing with friends is the best way to enjoy multiplayer, especially this new co-op mode.

“I think Locke gives us an interesting opportunity to look at the Chief from an outside perspective and question some of his motivations,” Halo 5 boss Josh Holmes told me at a recent demo event. “When Chief decides to go off alone with Blue Team, he asks [UN Space Command]: ‘Why are you doing this?’ Locke is ultimately called upon to find these answers.
“And Locke will come to his conclusion, though things will change as the story progresses.”
If Halo 5: Guardians is an extended chase scene, the universe is our busy city street. I played through two missions, and they took place in very different settings: a lonely naval intelligence office and a desert landscape on Sangelios, the homeworld of Halo’s bipedal elites.
And these missions dwarf any other in the franchise. Halo: Reach succeeded in placing us in the middle of intense battles, and the open world of Halo 3: ODST strayed from the lines of previous campaigns, but the scale of Halo 5 is so much more.

My journey through Sangelios as Sergeant Locke immediately underscored this scope. I stood with the rest of Fireteam Osiris on a cliff overlooking the canyon below us. Then came a leg; then another; and then the third. Upon the exposed fang emerged the Kraken, one of the greatest weapons of the Pact. It reminded me of the Scarabs from Halo 2 and Halo 3, their massive eight-story behemoths with plasma cannons and hordes of alien pilots.
But the Kraken was bigger than the three beetles put together. As Holmes says, it’s bigger than entire sections of Halo 4’s single-player campaign.
In fact, the Kraken took up so much space on the map that I thought it was part of the background. But that was not all: the call came over the radio and destroying the goliath became our top priority. So we jumped on the nearby battleships, smashed dozens of turrets on the Kraken’s upper deck, descended into its bowels and destroyed it from the inside out. This match lasted 10 minutes.
“With four playable Spartans per team, we really had to increase the number of enemies and the number of situations you can get yourself into,” Holmes said. “Although it was challenging from a design perspective, it became one of the driving forces behind the direction of our campaign.”

Despite the lonely corridors of the other mission, there was also a great sense of scale. Jackal snipers leaped from platform to platform as I traversed the dark hangars of the ONI facility along with the Chief and the rest of Blue Team.
