Hotel Room Tips Tricks – As much as I love hostels, there are good things about the comforts of hotels: clean rooms, comfortable beds, desks, irons, hard showers, and bottles of soap to eat (err… I mean borrow). They are a peaceful, relaxing place on earth.

Spend money on the room I will stay in for a few hours. That’s why I avoid hotels a lot – I don’t think they’re good value for money. I prefer to stay in hostels, they are cheap, connect with many people, and don’t make you feel removed from your destination. (I’ve always felt that hotels are isolated, like a concrete bubble that holds your destination.)

Back in 2014, I stayed at several hotels and decided to see if I could find the best hotel booking site on the web.

The conclusion? Well, there really isn’t a happy ending. Some places are better than others depending on the location and quality of the hotel but there is no clear winner.

I decided to do some more searching to try and find the best hotel booking website in 2018. This time the clear winner is Booking.com.

Location – and that’s the most important thing for budget travelers. The second best hotel booking website is Agoda, which is very efficient, although it is a strong group in Asia.

Fast forward to 2021, when I’m once again staying in several hotels as I drive cross-country (there aren’t many hostels in the US). And which is the best booking site right now? Google.

That’s all. Google will pull results from all the major booking sites and tell you which site is the cheapest. Just go there and book your hotel. That’s why it’s the best booking site because, instead of looking at each site, you can just go to Google, find out which site has the cheapest price, and book there. Save a lot of time!

Click the “View Hotels” button under the first section of results to go to Google’s hotel search center.

Next, enter your dates and narrow your search until you find a hotel you like in your price range. You will be able to filter by the lowest price and you can see the map to book by location.

Click on a hotel and you will be presented with all your booking options. Find the lowest price and go to that website. Just remember that the top results are usually ads, so scroll down to make sure you don’t miss any deals.

When booking a room, there are a few other hacks you need to know to ensure you get the best price possible:

1. Contact the hotel directly – find the hotel, call them, and ask them to match the offer (usually because it saves them work). If it’s a big global brand, the biggest advantage to booking direct is that you only get loyalty points and status when you book direct, so if you like travel hacks, don’t book their room anywhere else!

2. Use discount rates like AAA or AARP – If you are a member of AARP or AAA you can get special cheaper rates. Fun fact: Anyone can join AARP. I am a member. They have amazing travel deals (including deals on British Airways hotels and flights). It’s worth the membership.

3. Use Mr.Rebates or Rakuten – If the lowest rate is from a major booking site like Booking.com, Expedia, or Hotels.com, go through Mr.Rebates. Discounts or Rakuten. By using their link, you will get 1-4% cashback. It’s more savings that can add up over time.

4. Check out HotelTonight – This hotel booking app is perfect for last minute bookings. If you have a flexible schedule and wait until after 4 pm on the day, you can find hotels as cheap as 50%.

5. Try SnapTravel – This site is the best for US hotels. SnapTravel sends hotel deals directly to your phone or Facebook account. Just plug in your dates and what city you’ll be in, and they’ll send you the best deals. You can save up to 50% on hotel prices with them. They are a useful, under-the-radar service that has saved me a ton of money. Google will usually list them in their results but not always so it’s best to check them out directly.

6. Sign up for Booking.com and Hotels.com loyalty programs – Hotels.com gives you a free room after 10 bookings and Booking.com gives members a 10% discount on bookings. Yes, they helped a lot. Before you sign up for their loyalty program before you book with them!

7. Get discount gift cards – You can book great hotels with hotel gift cards. Check out sites like Giftcardgranny.com for discount gift cards and use them to book your hotel. (Purchasing gift cards also count towards earning points and status.

Buy other people’s reservations through Roomer – Most of the time people can’t travel and can’t cancel the reservation, so instead of wasting money, hotels put these rooms on Roomer, where they sell them at a discount to make money. Money back. I’ve never used this site, but I’ve heard good things about it.

Hotel prices are more stable than airline prices and tend to fluctuate less. I won’t spend hours searching hotel websites or days tracking prices like people do with airline prices. I spent at least, 30 minutes booking the hotel.
