Yosemite National Park Unveils Newly Restored Mariposa Grove
You can gain an even greater appreciation for the skills and strength of the Yosemite rock climbing community at the Yosemite Society Museum and Gallery.
The museum displays historic climbing artefacts, memorabilia, photography and publications as a way to help preserve the history of climbing.
Visitors can see how the sport of climbing and gear has evolved over time through various exhibits.
Museum staff can provide guided tours based on availability. Private tours for groups need to be booked in advance.
What You Need To Know Before Visiting Yosemite National Park
This museum is very informative with exhibits covering the California Gold Rush, Yosemite, Native Americans, the Spanish Institute and Mariposa County History.
Our teacher Chris really helped the history of the museum come alive for us with his interesting stories which included the life of the explorer John C. Fremont, who was also a politician when he was in the military camp.
For example, John Fremont described the furniture in one room of the mine in a comparison of two very different experiences and comforts of life without saying a word.
The Gold Rush continued in the area for about 7 years and then the area went to the miners who sold the tourist economy.
Hiking To The Mariposa Grove In Yosemite
Guided tours are available for small groups and families, but you need to contact the museum in advance.
Outside of them you can see the 5 Stamp Mill which is one of the few stamp mills still operating in the California Gold Country.
The Mariposa County Courthouse is the oldest courthouse in continuous use west of Sicily and dates back to 1854.
There is a program of maps of California that show how boundary lines have changed over the years and what they actually have.
Th Annual Mariposa Powwow
The judges’ court was not in session at the time of our visit which enabled us to view the courtroom located on the next floor.
You’ll find lots of shopping and restaurants in downtown Mariposa. The shops range from souvenirs, antiques, home decor and clothing shops.
I tried the shrimp a la diablo with sauteed shrimp in a sauce seasoned with butter, garlic and hot pepper. This is a great meal if you want a meal with some heat.
My husband enjoyed the enchilada combo platter. The portion sizes are generous and the chips and salty are also delicious.
Lodging Near Yosemite
The Forest House has a great atmosphere with plenty of seating inside and outside. You can enjoy live music in the craft beer and wine bar several nights a week.
In addition to craft beer and wine, you’ll find grapes, kombucha, hard cider, craft cocktails, and non-alcoholic options to choose from.
Forest House has a rotating farm-to-table menu if you want to grab a bite to eat during your visit.
We chose to enjoy our margaritas outside because the weather was very nice and the atmosphere relaxed.
Yosemite’s Washburn Fire Threatens Mariposa Grove Of Giant Sequoias
We knew we wanted to get up early the next morning for our trip to Yosemite National Park.
We got up early and left Mariposa before sunrise because we wanted to try to watch the sunrise in the National Park.
The Valley Floor Tour is a great way to see an overview of Yosemite Park if you’re short on time.
You are supposed to arrive 15 minutes before your departure on the last flight, which leaves early on time.

I would recommend getting there even earlier than that as the seats fill up quickly and you ride shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you.
I think it is far too difficult to explore the highlights of Yosemite National Park and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias (from the other side of the national park) in one day.
We really enjoyed the dedicated time to spend in all parts of the National Park over 2 days.
