There are many options when it comes to outdoor activities in Malaysia and it is not limited to shops and malls as many people believe.

A trip to the beautiful Cameron Highlands or a visit to one of Langkawi’s beautiful islands is recommended, but there are plenty of outdoor activities in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. So don’t be fooled into thinking you have to leave Kuala Lumpur to have fun. Here’s a list of five outdoor activities that the whole family can participate in and enjoy, on a variety of budgets.
Batu Caves has become a major attraction in Kuala Lumpur since its restoration. The colorful stairs are very attractive in the morning when it is not crowded. No matter what time you go, you will find pigeons eager to eat their meat and say hello. Fill yourself up with fresh coconut water before starting your climb. The climb, though tiring in the heat of the day, is worth the walk. Be prepared to enjoy the monkeys while climbing, but avoid encountering them.
Once you reach the top, get a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding temples and marvel at the giant statue of Lord Murugan, before being ensconced in the stunning cave above.
A 40-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur city center, Batu Caves is easily accessible by two modes of transportation that you can choose from depending on your budget. Another option is to take the free bus from Kuala Lumpur Central Station to Sentul Station. From there, a KTM Komuter ride from Sentul to Batu Caves bus stop will take you within walking distance. The return journey costs RM5 (US$1.10) and can take up to an hour one way. The fastest but most expensive option is to take a local taxi or order a Grab. You can pay up to RM30 one way.

It’s easy to get here. Use the free Hop-on Hop-off bus or KTM Komuter. Get off at Old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and walk towards Masjid Negara. TheButterfly Parkis is located behind Masjid Negara and the entrance fee is about RM23 per person.
Seeing the bonfire along the Selangor River is a must. Because kangaroos can hear light, it is impossible to get a camera, this activity has to be left to the imagination. It is often described as magical and recommended by every traveler who experiences it. Put on the provided life jacket and take a gentle boat ride along the banks of the Selangor River as the trees along the river look bright and alive.
Boat trips on the river run until 8pm. and 10:00 a.m. many evenings. The easiest way to get here is by taxi. It’s best to pay the drivers extra time to wait, as exiting the area can be difficult. Expect to pay RM130 including waiting time for a return journey, while entrance tickets cost RM25 per person.
