Outdoor Activities In Kuching – Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state, is the main entry point for visitors to Borneo. The historic town serves as a point of departure for locals living in mainland Malaysia and tourists seeking outdoor adventure. Kuching’s attractions include many hiking trails in national parks and a beautiful promenade along the Sarawak River with several attractions, as well as restaurants and souvenir shops.

The oldest park in Sarawak was established in 1957 and today it is known as one of the best wildlife viewing spots in Borneo. Bako National Park is home to many species of monkeys and reptiles that live in the area’s mangroves and rainforests, surrounded by nearly all of the island’s vegetation. The park consists of 16 hiking trails, some of which take a whole day. Others are short and great for families and groups looking to experience nature. Overnight camping is also available in Bako National Park.

As the capital of the state of Sarawak, Kuching is rich in history and culture. One of the best ways to learn about the culture and heritage of Kuching is to visit the local museums. These famous museums can be found in the center of Kuching and offer the best views of the region’s history and economy.

The city’s most famous and popular attraction, Kuching Waterfront is a promenade that stretches along one of Sarawak’s most beautiful river banks. In addition to trendy restaurants, street food vendors, and local shops and stores, visitors can find many museums and historical sites in the area. At night, the area is home to some of the city’s best nightlife, with concerts, live shows, sightseeing and Sarawak River Cruises.

Built in 1879 by Raja Charles Brooke of Sarawak, Fort Margarita is one of the city’s most important attractions. The fort was designed like a British castle and was built to protect the city from pirates. The Brooke Gallery, which houses artefacts and memorabilia from the Brooke era, is located within the castle.

Kubah National Park, located west of Kuching, is famous for its natural waterways, pools and vegetation, especially palm trees and wild orchids. Guests can encounter wildlife while hiking the park’s six jungle trails. In one direction, visitors can hike to the top of Mount Serapi (Gunung Serapi), while other paths lead through rainforests and parts of the Matang Wildlife Sanctuary.

Since I was staying at a volunteer house in the city, it was easy to get a Grab or Uber to all the attractions in Kuching. This gave me many opportunities to explore and build the beautiful city of cats

If you are a true blue lover and prefer the jungle to the craziness of the city, Kuching is the perfect place. Think orangutans, national parks, sea turtles, beaches and more.

Here is a quick overview of the best things to do in Kuching –

. It is a beautiful park for nature and wildlife lovers and has the highest density of proboscis monkeys endemic to Borneo. You can also see the beautiful Bornean bearded pigs and enjoy many jungle walks.

Because the weather is hot and humid, Bako requires careful planning and packing. Check out the night walk for a chance to meet one of Bako’s nocturnal animals.

In short, this park offers an amazing range of adventures and activities and is at the top of my list of things to do in Kuching.

Satang Island can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience if you visit during the turtle breeding season between April and September. If you’re lucky, you might see turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs or turtles escaping into the deep blue seas.

It can be an amazing experience and I have documented my entire experience of seeing this natural phenomenon in another blog post.

One of the best places to visit in Kuching is the beautiful mangrove tour to spot Irrawaddy dolphins. It starts from Damai Beach and usually takes 2-3 hours.

Borneo Highland Resort

On this trip we were lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins, ant monkeys, small water birds, small blue crabs and crocodiles up close.

The tour also includes a visit to a local fishing village, which provides an insight into the village culture.

Semenggoh is a former rehabilitation center where they call the orangutans “semi-wild”. The orangutans here are allowed to roam freely in the sanctuary, and rangers call for scheduled daily feeding times so that they never run out of food in the wild. Therefore, they may sometimes not come to look for fruit during feeding, as in the “wild” season.

Early morning is the best time to visit Semenggoh, so you can walk alone and bird and walk before feeding at 09:00. Lunch time is 1500 hours, but it is very hot and not a suitable time for any bird watching. ..

The rangers at Semenggoh are friendly and helpful. They will happily tell you all the organutans in the park, their names and interesting facts about the park and its past.

I did so. In no particular order, these are the top 3 birding spots in Kuching –

There are many fruit trees on the roads of Kubax that attract birds. A 3-4 hour birding session at Kubax is said to be fruitful. Make sure you go with an experienced guide. While in Cuba, visit the Matang Animal Rescue Center to understand what the Orangutan Project is all about and how you can help.

Borneo Highlands Resort – This is a luxury resort located about 45 minutes from downtown Kuching. This resort is located at an altitude of 1000 m above sea level and is surrounded by dense forests, which makes it ideal for mountain birds. I can’t test it, but all the nature lovers I’ve met swear by it. The only requirement is an extra early start around 0430 to get to the early morning birds in time.

Bako National Park – Bako was definitely my favorite. Since the park rangers and guides do not have a good knowledge of the birds (they know their anglers and sunbirds best), it is better to spend several nights in the best spots each morning. I had good luck around the restaurant, which is also a great place for a proboscis monkey. On one of my morning birding trips, I was lucky enough to see a proboscis without the usual tour, and I was alone at the time. I saw a white-bellied woodpecker and an Asian bluebird, both lifers.

There is no shortage of good birding guides in Kuching. Mr. Yeo is the most popular (and expensive) guide, but he is booked months in advance and is worth every cent he charges. However, if you’re on a budget (like us), just allow more time and look for fruit trees, discover areas near resorts, and get up early. Finding birds in the dense rainforest can be difficult, but keep your eyes open for signs and you’ll always be lucky!

Are you a cat lover? If so, I suggest you visit Kuching, the city of cats, and definitely check out this beautiful cat museum. One of the best indoor activities in Kuching to enjoy on a hot humid day.

Kuching Cat Museum has cute cat pictures, lots of cat posters, cat advertisements and cat pictures. However, the best part is the cat souvenirs that you can buy for only RM 10 for 3-10 pieces (depending on your purchase). It’s a total of $2.3 and you can choose between fridge magnets and keychains.

The cat museum is open until 1700 every day, so I recommend getting there early
