Hartbeespoort is a picturesque town in the North West Province of South Africa. Commonly and affectionately known by locals as ‘Harties’. Hartbeespoort is located about seventy kilometers from Johannesburg and is an hour’s drive from the city. It is a destination with a wide variety of activities and is lively on the weekends as many people make the short trip into town. I’ve compiled a list of six things to do in Hartbesspoort, and many of them are must-sees.

Your first stop should definitely be the Harties Aerial Cableway. Offers a round-trip cable car ride to Mount Magaliesburg. Adventure isn’t just about the cable car ride, which is a thrilling experience in itself. Once at the top of the hill, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Hartbeespoort Dam, the city of Magaliesburg and Hartbeespoort itself. Other activities offered at the top of the mountain include a mile-long hiking trail, restaurants to relax and digest the stunning views, a children’s playground, and a gift shop to pick up a souvenir. Mountain biking and paragliding are also available.

This hidden gem is located on one of the main streets in Hartbeespoort. Little Paris consists of a clothing boutique, deli, gift shop, and French-style restaurant, among others. However, the main reason it’s so popular, and its name, is because it’s a miniature version of the “Eiffel Tower” tucked atop a lake covered in “lovers’ locks.” The entrance to the tower is filled with different colored locks that decorate the lake fences. These locks can be purchased locally in various sizes. Couples can engrave their initials on the lock before placing it in a preferred spot. You can cross the bridge and go around the tower, enjoying the view of the lake. It’s the perfect Instagram spot with its photographic and delightful appeal.

Quick Tip: This place is extremely busy as everyone wants to take pictures in front of the tower. Therefore, it’s best to arrive early to avoid a long wait for a photo opportunity.

After Little Paris, the on-site café was purpose-built for the film French Toast and is known as

In the movie. It’s a must-try and offers a delicious menu of both sweet and savory French toast variations. I would recommend to try the milkshakes they offer which are delicious. They also have their “milkshake of the day” which is different every day. You have to ask the waiter what is available that day.

Kommandonek Resort (self Catering North West)

Another must is their croissants, the butter croissants are different from the usual and come with butter, jam, cheese and cream. Chocolate croissants filled with Belgian chocolate and served with ice cream are also available.

The staff is friendly and personable and it’s a great experience. Each table has a small ‘Eiffel Tower’ as its centerpiece and the interior of the cafe makes you feel like you are deep inside Paris. Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, there is something for everyone and this is a must, you won’t regret it.

One of the most iconic “landmarks” or landmarks is the dam itself. In practice, dams are mainly used for irrigation and for both domestic and industrial use. The dam is in the shape of an arch and is located in the Magaliesburg Range. The entrance to the dam is through a curved tunnel. Parking is not permitted at this dam. You have to park your vehicle in the spaces available through the tunnel from the dam and walk to that point of the dam. You can enjoy the view and take photos near the dam. The dam offers many activities, including water sports, boat rides, hikes, and a snake and animal park. So there is definitely something for everyone.

When you are in Meerhof, you will notice the large Dutch Windmill building and here you will find the Windmill Restaurant, Waffle House, Jasmyn Farm Kiosk and a few other kiosks and shops. A visit to the waffle house is a must here, where both sweet and savory waffles are prepared and a delicious milkshake topped with waffles is also offered. It is refreshing and very nourishing.
