Take my hometown of London, for example: the wait for Christmas is but a distant memory and the sky is an impenetrable, unyielding and very depressing grey. It is not pleasant.

Fifteen years ago, Ko Lanta was a sleepy archipelago of small islands, little visited and even less spoken.
Fast forward a decade and the world has started to realize that the Ko Lanta region is a) very beautiful and b) much less touristy than neighboring islands like Ko Phi Phi.
Add in more than a few idyllic beaches, tropical mangroves, rainforests, and some fantastic dive sites nearby and it’s clear why Ko Lanta is one of the rising stars on Thailand’s travel hotspot list and one of my favorite places to travel to. January.

I recently spent five weeks in Mexico and Oaxaca was pretty much the only non-negotiable destination I had on our travel bucket list. I’m glad it lived up to its promises and more.
The brightly colored city center is great for strolling, stopping here for a mezcaleria and an old colonial church – be sure to visit one of the city’s many markets to pick up a selection of handicrafts to take home.
That’s all before exploring the surrounding state of Oaxaca, the center of Mexico’s mezcal production and home to ancient temples and geological wonders like the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua.

I recently got into winter sports travel and was incredibly excited to discover this beautiful part of Northern Italy on a two week trip in early 2020 – skiing, snowshoeing and sledding around the Dolomites in one all-inclusive experience. -inclusive.
With 800km of ski slopes and stunning scenery, it’s a great place to visit in January if you want to hit the slopes and top it off with plenty of delicious food.

This is the place to savor empanadas before setting off to explore the wild Northwest, munching on coca leaves to ease the dizzying effects of the altitude. In other words, the perfect adventure.
I very, very rarely use this phrase, but Kay Caulker is literally one of the closest things to heaven on earth that I have come across.
Approximately 45 minutes by boat from Belize City, this small island is a place to relax, unwind, and immerse yourself in the slow pace of Belize-style living.
Taste freshly grilled lobster caught straight from the sea, swim with manta rays or simply spend lazy afternoons by the Split, a small body of water that separates the two parts of the island.

Caye Caulker is close to one of the world’s coolest dive sites, the Blue Hole, but even if your scuba diving skills are non-existent, you can see plenty of marine life just by strapping on a snorkel and sticking your head under the water. .
With mountains and beaches galore, breathtaking wildlife sanctuaries and a kaleidoscope of Buddhist temples to explore, the island nation is the perfect destination for those who enjoy an active holiday (many yoga retreats available) but also plenty of opportunities to unwind!
I’ll be honest: I haven’t spent as much time in Sri Lanka as I should have.
Despite wanting to go there for years, I spent just six days discovering only a fraction of what this beautiful island has to offer (unlike Flo from Yoga, Wine, Travel, who is an expert on Sri Lanka and whose beautiful new place , Sam & Lolas got me planning my next trip to the island).

However, those six days were enough for me to be confident enough to say that if you’re looking for a beautiful coastline, vibrant culture and good food to turn your stomach, Sri Lanka is the place for you.
Sri Lanka has emerged as one of Asia’s hippest wellness destinations, with a number of chic getaways like Santani and Trilanka opening their doors to help you find your inner chi.
But there’s more to the island than yoga with gorgeous (however appealing) views – surfing, hiking, safaris, cuisine – Sri Lanka truly has something for everyone.
Temperatures are pleasantly cool (21-32°C), but humidity levels remain low – perfect if you tend to sweat. While this may not be the best month for sunbathing on a fine white sand beach, it could be quite a trip.

Hanoi isn’t shy and laid-back, laid-back or even particularly beautiful, but wait a minute before you write it off as a busy city with a staggering number of scooters.
It might take a while to find the trinkets of Hanoi, but they are definitely out there. The bustling center has tranquil lakes overlooking serene temples, history is around every corner, and the food on offer is some of the best in the world.
No, really – I don’t know a single person who has been and hasn’t come back raving about the food – from the crispy spring rolls to the bowls of aromatic pho, a city trip is truly a feast for all the senses.
Uruguay is well known in South America as a beautiful beach destination, but its appeal is less well known further afield. 660km (410 miles) of coastline is a lot, especially when much of it is powdery sand and perfect surf.

Punta del Este’s nicknames “Uruguay’s Centropez” and “South Miami Beach” speak volumes.

Barbados is where the magic happens, this happy confluence of sun-kissed beaches, cricket, rum shacks, palm trees and partying. I can’t think of a better place to greet the new year.
The pristine golf courses, five-star hotels and manicured beaches of Barbados’ west coast are a little secret, but the more rugged eastern Atlantic coast draws more attention from travelers drawn to the promise of pristine beaches and shopping.

As beautiful as Barbados is, I will say that you won’t do the island justice if you stick to the beaches alone.
Some of my favorite memories come from places that had nothing to do with the beach. Learn how the world-famous Mount Gay Rum is made as you sit in the stands, watch a cricket match and explore the Andromeda Botanical Gardens to begin…
