Barbera started working at Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts, which owns the Burj Al Arab, as a caretaker in the Maldives two years ago. Before that, he spent four seasons in Paris while studying at Emlion Business.

During training, Barbera said he rotated through the beverage, housekeeping and front desk departments, adding that guards had to memorize the entire hotel layout.

Beyond logistics and operations, Barbera said the key to success in the hospitality industry is emotional intelligence because every day and every guest is different.
You can’t really predict anything and you always have to react quickly to any situation, he said. “Because when you are the caretaker, in the eyes of the guest, you are the person who can handle anything and make anything happen.”
According to Barbera, follow a few simple rules when it comes to interacting with guests: respect privacy and confidentiality, read the room, and approach the guest (never make them feel the need to approach you).
“Some guests want a strong presence of their bodyguards during the day and some guests want more discretion,” he said. “So you have to really use your emotional skills to understand expectations.”
