I compiled this list by ranking my personal favorites. So if you are limited on time, I recommend you start at the top of the list and work your way down. If there’s one place you absolutely must see in South Africa, it’s Cape Town. It is the oldest European building in South Africa (1652) and is therefore often called the Mother City.
Best Places To Visit In South Africa
It is difficult to describe Cape Town in just a few words. You really need to experience it to be able to appreciate the blend of African and European culture, the blend of tradition and modernity, and the fusion of city life and nature… If South Africa is now a world in one country, it is Cape The city is a world in one the city. Don’t miss it when you visit South Africa!
Here are some of the main places to see in Cape Town: Victoria & Alfred Water, Table Mountain, Signal Hill & Lion’s Head, Robben Island, Bo-Kaap area, Kirstenbosch National Botanic Gardens, Two Oceans Aquarium, as well as the city. center with markets, shops, restaurants and local museums.
If the gondola to the top of Stone Mountain is open, go there first. It is often closed due to strong winds, so don’t leave it for the last day.
Along with Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula is one of South Africa’s most beautiful regions. This is one of those places you really don’t want to miss!

Highlights of the Cape Peninsula include the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point and the spectacular 12 Apostles coastline from Camps Bay to Hout Bay and south along Chapman’s Peak Drive.
Don’t miss Simon’s Town with the penguin colony Boulder’s Beach (yes, you can see penguins in South Africa!) The Groot Constantia wine region on the Cape Peninsula has beautiful scenery and great wines, especially in South Africa.
Also, in Hout Bay you can go on a boat to see the seal colony – it’s called Duiker Island, but most people call it Hout Bay Seal Island. This is a very popular place with tourists, so you may want to book in advance. For a more unique experience, you can go seal diving.
One day is not enough to see the highlights of the Cape Peninsula. So if you can, try to spend at least a few days in this area. I recommend at least a week for Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, with at least 3-4 days.

Another amazing area, the Garden Route is also one of the must-see places in South Africa. This +-200km road between Mossel Bay and Stormsrivier is one of the most beautiful roads in the world, but you have to take your time to really appreciate it.
You can drive the Garden Route in half a day, but you won’t see much if you’re sitting in a car. So at least you need a few days to explore this area. Some of the most beautiful places on the park route are Storms River and Tsitsikama National Park, nature reserve, Plettenberg Bay, the whole area around Knysna (don’t miss Heads and Featherbed Private Nature Reserve!), wilderness and beautiful coastline along the entire route.
Oudtshoorn, famous for its ostrich farm and Cango Caves, is a bit off the beaten track but is considered part of the Garden Route. Worth a visit.
If you’re traveling with kids or simply love wildlife, don’t miss Monkey Land and Birds of Paradise (both nearby). Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is a great place for a family safari along the Garden Route, and the Knysna Elephant Park is one of the best places to interact with elephants in South Africa.

Kruger National Park is undoubtedly one of the most popular places to visit in South Africa. If you want the best wildlife safari experience in South Africa, Kruger NP is the place to be.
Kruger is the oldest and largest national park in South Africa. I give you an idea, with 2,000,000 hectares (20,000 km)
), it is about the size of Israel or the state of New Jersey. In other words, Kruger NP is huge! Ideally, you plan to spend at least 2-3 days in Kruger NP and do a few game drives.
Hundreds of species of animals call Kruger home, and it’s the best place to see the Big 5 in South Africa. The Big 5 refers to the five most difficult African animals to hunt on foot: lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo. Hunting really isn’t fun anymore, but the term is widely used as a sort of ‘5 must see African animals’ list.

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the most beautiful natural sights in South Africa. It is also one of the largest canyons in the world. Due to its proximity to several main entrances to the Kruger National Park, the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and the entire Panorama Route make day trips in the area.

Along with Kruger NP, the Blyde River Canyon is one of the most popular tourist destinations in northern South Africa.
Start your day with breakfast at the famous Harrie’s Pancakes in Graskop. Then head north to Pinnacle, Window’s Window, and Wonder View. Other sights on the Panorama route include Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls, as well as Bourke’s Lucky Holes and the Lowveld Viewpoints. But most impressive of all is the view of the Three Rondavels. The scenery here is simply amazing!
The three Rondavels were one of the first places we visited when we arrived in South Africa and this image stayed with us forever. There we fell in love with this unique country and realized that it has more to offer than we thought… Don’t miss it if you visit Kruger NP and have a day to spare!
