Since my son starts college in January, we thought this might be our last chance to travel together as a family of 5. so I really had to take them with me. We could have flown in, but since hubs and I are both California natives, we thought it would be a great opportunity to show the kids all the wonderful places we love in our home state. We decided to rent a motorhome and set off on an 11-day round trip. California Rockin’ Roadtrip: An Eco Tour Guide And Travel Journal
It was a 3,200 mile drive from North Idaho and back, and I can tell you if we were to do it over again, I would buy a bigger RV. But to be fair, we tried. We actually booked a bigger one with windows on the side where the kids could look out and see the coast. But unfortunately the people who rented it before us didn’t return it in time and we were stuck taking little or nothing at the last minute. It was a huge risk, but it worked. But let’s move on to our favorite spots.
Glass Beach is located in Ft. Bragg and it was one of my best sights. We stopped in Oregon Beach the first night, but made sure we got to Ft. The next brag, so we could go up to the glass beach as soon as the sun came up.
It is basically a collection of small pieces of sea glass that have been trapped by the sand. Instead of walking on soft sand, it’s like walking on gravel. Only that gravel is pieces of glass stone in all colors. It was so beautiful. It was really beautiful to see in person.
While we were there exploring, we found so many tide pools full of marine life. It reminded me of when my Girl Scouts visited the tide pools in So Cal when I was a kid. It was something I will remember forever and I was excited for my kids to have a taste of that experience there at Glass Beach.
Hours In Sonoma Valley, California
Driving through the redwoods was probably the most magical part of the whole trip. It’s a place like no other in the world, and you can’t really understand the enormity of this space until you’re in those trees that have been growing since biblical times.
We had a long drive ahead of us before we got to where we were staying, so we didn’t explore here as much as I would have liked. This is really more of a destination than a transition. However, there were plenty of stops and stops. So we took advantage of that and trained the camera. It was breathtaking and I wish I could have taken more pictures of what this remarkable place looks like. We hope to plan a trip specifically to explore the Redwoods.
Now I know it’s a route, not a destination. But what I mean is. Yes, it is full of twists and turns and at times it was difficult and slow to navigate, but there are places like this where you can stop and admire the coastal view.
This was my view for much of our trip. It certainly made it hard to stay motivated with the book when all I wanted to do was look at the Pacific Ocean. I don’t get to see it nearly as much as I did as an adult, and I miss it all the time. So I wanted to take as much of it as I could.

This is really the best itinerary if you want to see the beautiful California coast and have a day or two to spare.
It really is the symbol of California, isn’t it? It was busier than I remember when I was last there 20 years ago. We drove over the bridge, saw Alcatraz out the window and before we knew it we were downtown… in a 25′ RV. I definitely don’t recommend doing this part of the trip in an RV. The streets are quite narrow, so with our wide mirrors we couldn’t really fit in when there were other big cars next to us. It was scary at times and I wish we were in a regular car. But I was so happy for the kids to see this city that is synonymous with California. You really should visit San Francisco at least once in your life.
The Disneyland Resort is one of the most popular family vacation spots, and for good reason. Your kids will love meeting their favorite Disney characters while immersing themselves in the magic of the parks. A variety of rides and great entertainment means there’s something for everyone in your family, regardless of age. A Disneyland vacation is sure to be a trip your kids won’t forget.
If your family prefers a beach vacation, San Diego is the perfect place for you. The weather is great all year round and there are more than 15 beaches in the city alone. Your kids will love that SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo are also nearby.

Huntington Beach is another great destination for families looking for a great beach vibe. The best thing about Huntington Beach is that it’s close to Anaheim. This means your family can spend time enjoying the sun and the magic of Disney. Huntington Beach is a vacation destination that appeals to children of all ages.
Huntington Beach was the closest beach to where I grew up, so I spent most of my days there. While I was in my classroom, the family went to explore all the wonderful sights in my house. It was nice for them to see it all. I wish I could have been with them, but my class was an opportunity that I am very grateful to have experienced. It definitely pays off in business.
If your kids are grown, Los Angeles might be the best place for your next vacation. Universal Studios Hollywood is the main attraction here, especially since the Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in April. Universal Studios is not the only gem in Los Angeles. You can explore the Hollywood Walk of Fame or the Candle Museum, catch a game at Dodger Stadium or wander the Santa Monica Pier. Los Angeles is the perfect destination for families who want to taste it all.
