Sailing holidays are now popular and people from all over the world travel to many places to spend quality time, as cities such as Hong Kong, Bangkok and London have been leading the city rankings for many years. The locations below them — shown in the infographic above — help highlight some of the interesting travel trends that preceded COVID-19.

Using data from the Euromonitor International 2019 Travel Report, we can find out where travelers are most likely to go when their passports come in handy again. Downloading data from 400 cities collected in mid-2019, the report includes millions of international travelers who stayed at their destinations for more than 24 hours.

Although the top spot on the list has remained fairly stable compared to rankings in recent years, the two cities have seen an impressive influx of travelers.

Please note that the only North American city, New York City, is in the top 10. Similarly, Asian cities account for half of the top teams, with two of the top 10 cities in China. Although Hong Kong leads the top 100, political unrest led to a significant drop in international visitors by 4.2% from 2017 to 2019.

The biggest changes in the top 10 were made by Macau and Istanbul, but the increase was slow. Both cities gained two places between 2013 and 2018, although each city had higher passenger growth, with Macau up 19.0%.

It should also be noted that based on the data collected in 2019, London is expected to continue its downward trend, bringing it to fifth place, mainly due to the complexities caused by Brexit and relevant visa restrictions.

Significant changes in the pattern of urban travel are taking place in the bottom 10. Hotspots in Asia are gaining ground and are quickly entering the top 100, a sign of a change in global preferences before the lockdown began.

The country’s largest urban destinations have an average passenger growth of 17.8% from 2017 to 2019. When looking at Japan’s perfect blockade of COVID-19, this trend can be combined in the following year.

The strong rise in Japan’s ranking is followed by India. India’s seven cities in the top 100 rose 229 places with a whopping average growth rate of 44.6% from 2017 to 2019. Some of the growth is the result of lifestyle tourism, particularly in the case of Delhi, which has seen an increase in travel prices. 49.6% since 2017.

Before the epidemic, Delhi was expected to continue to grow steadily and see a jump in the ranking, currently placed at No. 11.

According to the World Tourism Council, cities such as Macau, Cancun, Marrakech and Las Vegas all rely heavily on direct tourism and their contribution to GDP growth. As of 2018, more than 50% of Macau’s GDP is drawn directly from tourism, while nearly half of Cancun’s GDP depends on travelers.

Countries like India and the Philippines are also heavily dependent on travel. India has two employment-to-tourism ratios for every tourist, and the Philippines has one employment-to-tourist ratio.

Eruptions have disrupted these potentials, with much of the world shutting down in early 2020. However, it is only a matter of time before the world reopens.
