As retired people who enjoy traveling we decided to continue our journey by continuing to Perth. Here are our top 11 beach resorts north of Perth, Western Australia.
Before we started our trip across Australia we really didn’t know much about Western Australia. Obviously we knew a little about the main tourist spots. So one of the things that made us happy was discovering the beauty of the West Coast of Australia. These are some of our findings.
The distance between Derby and Perth is 2,374.2km, and if your journey is a direct journey. To enjoy the west coast of Australia you often have to turn off the highway and drive to the coastal towns. So the miles are flying by. In fact, this is a big road trip – one way.

Derby was the first place we saw the west coast of Australia, and it was the first place we saw the sun set over the Indian Ocean.
This was a very interesting place. Big waves are amazing. Looking forward to seeing the big waves and flat mud. And the views of the ocean and waves from Derby, as we fly to Horizontal Falls, are amazing. Such was the experience of the night at Horizontal Falls (which we both voted as our first experience in Western Australia).
Broome is considered by many to be the star of the north. It’s surprising that such a small town is such a big tourist destination. We just loved Cable Beach – swimming, sunsets, camel rides, 4WD on the beach. Lots of fun.
We were also lucky enough to see the Stairway to the Moon in Broome. Try and plan your visit to Broome when the moon is full, as the Stairway to the Moon is great to see.

Eighty Mile Beach is a short distance away. Nothing beats a caravan park and a beach. It is very popular with backpackers traveling around Australia. Eighty Mile Beach is a popular fishing spot. It is also a beautiful place with beautiful sunsets. Plus, it’s a great place to enjoy a break on the road.
Ningaloo Reef is a listed World Heritage site. This marine park is a safe haven for whale sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, manta rays and reef fish. It’s just an amazing place.
We had never heard of Ningaloo Reef. Can you believe it? This is probably the best kept secret in Western Australia. Ningaloo Reef is very close to the beach. Just drop into Turqoiuse Bay or Oyster Stacks and immerse yourself in the coral reefs. It’s amazing!
Then, for the experience of a lifetime, we swim with the whale sharks. We never dreamed we could do such a thing – simply because we didn’t know you could do such a thing.

Coral Bay is protected by the Ningaloo Reef. This is a beautiful bay, with beautiful calm waters, and is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Western Australia. Coral Bay is another diving and fishing paradise, and offers all the wonders of Ningaloo Reef Marine Park.
Carnarvon was originally a port town at the mouth of the Gascoyne River. This region has a hot, semi-arid climate and is known as the food bowl region of Western Australia. We drove to the market in the gardens and fields, and bought good fresh fruit and vegetables.
We also enjoyed walking along the beautiful Carnarvon foreshore. We are very impressed with the recent development of this site.
Denham and Shark Bay is another very beautiful area, also with beautiful white beaches and clear water.

The waters, islands and islands surrounding Shark Bay were heritage listed because the area has one of the most diverse seabeds in the world. In this marine park you can have a chance to see dugongs, turtles, dolphins, manta rays and whales. Furthermore, the Hamelin Pool stromatolites are the oldest living fossils on earth. During our visit to Denham we also enjoyed learning about the history of the area. Dirk Hartog was the first European to reach the WA 400 years ago.
Monkey Mia is another great place. It is famous for its friendly pod of wild dolphins that regularly swim to Monkey Mia Beach to meet people. Dolphins have been eating out of their hands for over 30 years. Nowadays, there is a strict management program to ensure that many dolphins are not dependent on hand feeding for tourists. We enjoyed visiting this beautiful place and were impressed by the way they take care of the dolphins.
Kalbarri is a small coastal town at the mouth of the Murchison River. This is another popular tourist destination, and we totally understand why. We found beautiful coastal cliffs with great ocean views, beautiful river scenery, as well as Kalbarri National Park. We spent 10 days in Kalbarri and loved the place.
We recommend a visit to Kalbarri National Park. We enjoyed exploring the rock formations at Nature’s Window, Murchison River Gorge, and Z Bend.
Best Winter Holiday Destinations In Wa
The Kalbarri Coastal Cliff walk is also a must. We rode the rocks for 13 km and enjoyed the view a lot. At the top of the cliffs we watched whales, dolphins and seabirds. We enjoyed visiting natural rock formations, such as Mushroom Rock, Red Bluff, and Natural Bridge. In addition, storyboards along the cliff path told us about historical shipwrecks.
We also enjoyed visiting the historic Murchison House Station – one of the oldest pastoral stations in Western Australia.
Pinnacles are limestone formations (some up to 5 meters) in Nambung National Park. These impressive structures were built about 25,000 to 30,000 years ago, after the sea receded (there is a view of the sea in the distance). To see the many ways you can walk or drive this unique park.
If you’ve traveled down the West Coast of Australia from Derby, make sure you don’t pass Perth. There is so much space in Western Australia that some may be tempted to continue their road trip. But we found Perth a refreshing change. Perth is a great city and easy to get around. Visit Perth’s beautiful beaches, Kings Park and Botanical Gardens, cruise down the Swan River in Fremantle, enjoy a wine and food tour of the Swan Valley, and much more.

If you are planning to visit the Kimberley region, make sure you have time to go down to Western Australia near Perth. The color of the west coast of Australia is amazing. It usually has a turquoise color and is simply delicious. We marveled at the coral reefs, close to shore, for a good part of the trip.
Western Australia is a big country. In size, it is actually a third the size of Australia. The country has a large population. Therefore, you will travel long distances between cities. And, when we got to the towns, they were generally smaller than we expected. But we still managed to get everything we needed. The roads were very good, there are many free camping areas between the towns. Also remember, you will not be alone during the tourist season. There are many homeless people, in caravans, motorhomes, and campers, who continue to travel the highways of the North and North West. We encourage you to join the crowd. It is truly a road trip of a lifetime.
