Thailand holds a special place in my heart because it’s where it all started for me. It was there that I decided to quit my job and travel the world. I used to live there. I loved it there. Thailand is amazing.
As a tourist hub for decades, Thailand has become the backpacker hub of Southeast Asia, with cheap hotels and cheap street food (available for as little as $1) costing $25-$35 a day. !), local buses and many cheap and free attractions. If you spend all your time on the islands in expensive accommodation, expect to pay around $60 a day. However, even in terms of price, Thailand is still one of the cheapest destinations in the world, so don’t miss it!
Of Europe’s Best Cheap Summer Holiday Destinations
Want to see ancient ruins, trek through jungles, travel and eat delicious food with few tourists around? Visit small Central American countries—think El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Here you can get $15-$30 a night, food for less than $5, most buses about the same price, and beer for even less.
Belize, Panama, Costa Rica – these are expensive (but affordable) destinations by regional standards. If you visit these Central American countries, you can earn $40-$50 a day as a backpacker, or $100 a day and live off the beaten track. Your money really does go a long way in this part of the world. And since there aren’t that many countries to choose from, it’s easy to move around and see a lot without straining your eyes.
You could put all of Southeast Asia on this list, but Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the region – affordable, beautiful, and the locals are incredibly hospitable. You can get a private, air-conditioned room for $25, street food for $2-5, and nationwide shipping for $20-25. If you’re spending around $50 a day, you’re living large.
Cambodia is cheaper than famous Thailand, but just as beautiful and full of the nicest people in the world. Plus, there’s the amazing Angkor Wat (expensive to visit but well worth the splurge!).

Located in Southeast Europe, the Balkans is one of the cheapest regions in Europe. Comprised of just a handful of countries, most of which see very few tourists – it’s an off-the-radar region that’s affordable and offers great value. While places like Dubrovnik have seen an increase in tourist traffic (due to cruise ships landing there), much of the region is ideal for adventure travel. It has cheap wine, great hiking, nature, amazing beaches, delicious food and wild nightlife. It’s Europe’s best kept secret.

But every country gets cheaper when you get off the beaten path and inland. Here you will find the best travel deals and discounts! China is still one of the world’s most treasured destinations, and for its sheer size (it’s the third largest country by land area), there’s plenty to see and do!
The Indian rupee, which has always been a cheap country, rose to 39 rupees against the US dollar. Now you get 78 rupees per US dollar, almost 50 percent more money to travel. Unless you’re booking a five-star resort and eating only Western food, you’d be hard-pressed to spend $50 a day here. You can get around $30 by staying in a cheap hotel, taking a second-class train, and avoiding western food. If you’re willing to part with it, you can live big on $60 a day. Even famous places like the Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world, are very cheap (just $14 to enter).
India is an affordable backpacking destination with a rich cultural history, mouth-watering cuisine, helpful and curious locals, incredible regional diversity, great tea and more. It’s a vast area to explore in one big trip or several short segments. In any case, don’t miss India.
Georgia has everything I need in a destination: cheap, delicious food and wine, great hiking, mountain scenery, and not too many tourists. I loved it immediately and wish I had gone sooner (I loved it so much that I extended my stay!).

Budget travelers can get just about anything here, spending $25 a day. A beer is about $2, and groceries for the week are $25-$30. USD, most museums and historical sites cost only USD 2-3.
Although it may seem out of the way, Georgia is one of the next big backpacking hubs. I would go back in a heartbeat!
Not all euro countries are equal and Portugal is one of the cheaper countries in the region and one of my favorites. I fell in love with this country the first time I visited. Beautiful beaches, rolling wine country, stunning coastal cliffs, delicious food, lovely locals and historic towns all for this price, how can you not?

If you’re a backpacker on a budget, you can eat for $45-$60 a day.

Spent a lot of time there. And I flew. Mexico City is a foodie paradise, Oaxaca has lots of charm (and a never-ending flow of mezcal!), and the Yucatan is great for hiking and cenote exploring. It’s also very close to the US, so it’s not cheap (beer only $1-$2, groceries $25/week, you can eat here for less than $50/day) but it’s cheaper to come here – double win!
Although some areas are not safe to explore, most parts of the country are for you to enjoy. Beaches, parties, food, history, nature, whatever your interests are, you can safely enjoy every corner of the country.
