Munich Germany Top Tourist Attractions – Munich brings to mind some iconic images such as Oktoberfest celebrations with overflowing trays of beer and locals dressed in leather. There is still that side of the city, which is the third largest in Germany after Berlin and Hamburg, but there is also a highly developed part with advanced culture and cutting-edge technology (e.g. BMW headquarters).

Munich has a livable quality as the capital of the beautiful southern state of Bavaria and captures German gemütlichkeit quality or comfort better to me than any other city in the country. I have been to Munich many times, and had the opportunity to spend a week with a host family to experience German life firsthand as part of a month-long exploration of Germany and Austria right after high school. It’s my favorite German city, which takes more of its lifestyle from southern European neighbors like Italy than from its bustling, business-focused brethren like Frankfurt, Hamburg or Berlin.

There are large outdoor spaces like Marienplatz, which are a great way to get to know the feel and look of the city, take in the famous Glockenspiel performance and admire the exuberant architecture. There are baroque and rococo churches and palaces that you wouldn’t normally associate with Germany, but that’s part of Munich’s lively and playful style. The Frauenkirche is one of the city’s most iconic sights with its twin onion domes, and should be combined with a visit to the nearby St. Peters Church observation deck for the best views of the city while heading into the heart of downtown.

The astonishing number of museums underline Munich’s deep cultural roots, from its founding days of local monks (the origin of the name München in German) on the salt trade route to Salzburg, to its long royal association with the Wittelsbach dynasty. The many artistic treasures that the ruling family collected and produced can be seen in the extensive collection of the Residenz Museum, their former palace complex.

King Ludwig wanted his city to be a new Athens in its cultural splendor and established the great Greek temples at Königsplatz which includes the Glyptothek Museum of Sculpture and the State Antiquities Collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. Another great collection is the German Museum, which has an amazing collection of science and technology displays like the German version of the Smithsonian Institution. More modern architecture and design history can be found at BMW World, the museum for car enthusiasts, and creative buildings in the Olympic Park, where Munich hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy Munich’s public spaces such as the huge English Garden with its Chinese beer garden and pagoda and the unlikely spectacle of surfers tackling the waves in the Eisbach river. I especially like the peace and quiet of the Hofgarten behind the Residenz Museum.

Finally, let yourself be fooled by the tourist and visit the Hofbräuhaus for its exciting atmosphere, endless beer tables, communal tables and traditional Bavarian music.

Guide yourself into the heart of Munich’s city center by visiting the beautiful Marienplatz (Our Lady’s Square) in the city’s Old Town district. The square contains ornate buildings such as the New Town Hall with its statues and towers, and the historic Old Town Hall with its picturesque tower. The neo-Gothic New Town Hall was built between 1867 and 1908.

You will also find monuments such as Mariensaule from 1638 with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary, built to commemorate the end of Swedish occupation at the end of the Thirty Years’ War.

The main attraction is the fictional Glockenspiel added to the New Town Hall tower in 1908, which draws audiences to watch the mechanical clock faces perform at 11am and noon daily, and an additional show at 5pm from March to October. There are 32 characters that charmingly represent various vignettes.

The wedding of Duke Wilhelm V and Renato de Lorraine in 1568 was celebrated with a tournament of a tournament. The royal couple stand in their box while two pairs of knights compete on horseback (the Bavarian knight knocks the Lorraine knight off his horse each time). The third main square worth visiting is Odeonsplatz. The open pavilion called the Feldherrnhalle with three large arches was built from 1841 to 1844 and modeled after the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. Here rest two large lions together with a statue honoring the Bavarian military leaders. The beautiful Theatinerkirche, with its twin towers and one wing of the Residenz palace, adorns the picturesque and historically important square.

Feldherrnhalle is the place where Adolf Hitler failed his first coup, confirming the fact that part of the history of Munich is the period of the Third Reich and Hitler. Although it’s a dark chapter that many might choose to forget, the city has many historical associations with the Nazis, including the Odeonsplatz, and this 90-minute tour provides a historical guide to the sites and history of the era. My favorite royal residence in Munich is the baroque Nymphenburg Palace, in the northwest section of the city. The palace was initially started in 1662 to celebrate the birth of Prince Ferdinand Maria’s male heir, and Princess Henrietta Maia hired an Italian architect to design and build Nymphenburg. Highlights inside the palace include the richly decorated stone hall, frescoes and private rooms with ancient tapestries and works of art, the palace chapel, and the Gallery of Beauty, a series of portraits of women who caught the attention of Ludwig I, including the infamous dancer Lola . Montez.

There are a series of four more museums within the palace covering areas such as natural history, ceramics and paintings, but to me the most notable is the Marstallmuseum, which displays a collection of beautiful state coaches in the former court stables.

The park is reminiscent of Versailles in its formal French style, with a series of beautiful little chateaux adorning the grounds. The Amalienburg hunting lodge has a magnificent hall of mirrors and is a Rococo masterpiece. Pagodenburg was built for tea ceremonies and has an Asian-influenced interior. Badenburg was for pool parties and had the first heated pool in post-Roman Europe.

Just walking around the grounds and exploring is fun. You just need to set aside a good part of the day to enjoy everything you can see and do here!
